Tip to backup your Data
If you don’t have another MAC there is another way to backup files, its going be slow but will work.
1) Plug another external 2.5 USB drive to the remaining USB slot, copy important files. Ignore apps , system folder etc.
2) Shutdown and Remove old HDD cable.
once you are up and running go to the System Preferences/Start Up Disc and select the MacOS drive and restart. Its a good idea to do this as pulling OS drives, swapping around, booting via other routes can get this confused once the original drive is back ‘home’.
This could be a good time to do a fresh load of the OS. Never know if the cable going flaky messed up some apps or pieces of code in the systems folders.
